Set on the beautiful River Ill, in a small town
called Illhaeusern (which means ‘houses along the river Ill’), this property
has been in the hands of the Haeberlin family for more than 150 years. A
traditional auberge, offering local fare and terrific accommodation in the new
(built in 1992) L’Hotel des Berges.
L’Auberge de l’Ill was awarded its first Michelin star in 1952, followed
by two in 1957 and finally three in 1967, which they have maintained ever
since.
The Hotel des Berges is located across a beautiful
garden, right on the river, about 100m leisurely stroll from the restaurant.
The rooms are country-chic with lots of wood, old-fashioned nick-nacks and
cleverly restored farmyard items, the comfort level is high and the bath is big
enough to fit a giant. It’s the only way to travel when you’re eating at
L’Auberge de l’Ill.
Illhaeusern is the ideal base for daytrips to visit
the exciting and bustling old town of Ribeauville. Lots of photo opportunities
there, if you can squeeze a shot in between all the moving cars. Even more
enchanting is the 12th century walled town of Riquewihr where
thankfully no cars are allowed in the old city. This is a beautiful part of the
world!
