Landgasthof Bären

The Hiltbrunner Family’s comfortable traditional wooden guesthouse in the lovely village of Sumiswald provides a great base from which to conduct day trips into the surrounding Emmenthal countryside.

It’s worth staying here for the breakfast buffet alone: cold meats, local cheeses and yoghurts, house-made rye bread and more all served in the atmospheric old wooden dining room. In fact this is a place to enjoy good Emmentaler cuisine in comfortable surroundings with friendly service at any time of day, locals drop by for mid-morning coffee or mid-afternoon schnapps and the local fare includes the usual rösti, wurst, soups and salads all very well executed and accompanied by a good wine list. The house speciality of Bernerteller (Bernese plate) with various sausages and cooked meats, sauerkraut and boiled potatoes is excellent.

The 18 guest rooms are basic but spacious and comfortable with typical local wooden furnishings, crisp white sheets and good water pressure.
