Basildene Manor

By Franz Scheurer

This beautiful old house was built in 1912 by Percy Willmot, an early pioneer of the Margaret River region who arrived in 1887 as an 18 year old and married into a local farming family. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens of colourful flowers and edibles, including a wonderfully gnarly old bush lemon tree, thistle-like artichokes and many herbs; wandering through the gardens early in the morning or at sunset (when kangaroos come down to graze) is one of the highlights of a stay here.

Rooms, both in the original house and the sensitively-designed extension, offer ‘old world’ charm with modern comforts. Public areas include a lounge that opens out onto the lawn and is well equipped with books and DVDs, and a lovely dining room, also with lawn views, which serves an excellent breakfast.

Located 5 minutes drive outside the township of Margaret River, Basildene offers a tranquil rural setting, while still being close enough for guests to enjoy a meal at Ze Arc of Iris, Vat 107 and other Margaret River restaurants. A 10 minute drive in the other direction brings you to beautiful beaches and famous vineyards, while a short drive south along nearby Caves Road winds through forests of tall, straight karri trees and passes a network of spectacular limestone caves.

A stay at Basildene Manor makes a visit to the beautiful Margaret River region even more memorable.
