Bed of Roses
Orange, in western NSW, has a lot to offer. Its high altitude creates its own microclimate, resulting in fantastic wine, berries, mushrooms and other local delicacies. There are a couple of good restaurants and I recommend it highly for a weekend excursion from Sydney.
The best places to stay are one of the many B&B’s
springing up around town. Dee and Rob Napier offer several different options at
their property ‘Bed of Roses’, just out of town: a room inside their big
homestead; the secluded and colourful ‘Whispering Moon’ (sitting on top of the
ridge); ‘Wild Rose Cottage’ (perfect for families with kids); the wonderfully
renovated old shearers’ quarters called ‘Black Sheep’, complete with lots of
dark wood, corrugated iron and a professional kitchen (great for a few couples
wanting to spend some time together). Whichever you chose, the Napiers will
look after you with good old-fashioned country hospitality.
Value for money is excellent and views over the local countryside are charming. There’s even a small lake!
