Radisson
SAS Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek
(Formerly Intercontinental Dubai)
Dubai has established itself as one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world. Superbly connected to the rest of the world via Emirates airline (Dubai is its major hub), it caters for tourists and business people of all tastes. Dubai is an architect’s dream; almost anything goes and there’s plenty of money to realise the dreams. White sands, unspoilt beaches, pristine dunes, camel rides, 4WD adventures, a stroll through the ancient Gold or Spice Souks or a shopping extravaganza at one of the incredible malls; Dubai is a wonderful, exotic and safe place to visit.
The creek used to be the lifeline of the town as the sea is too shallow to allow access by larger boats. An armada of traditional wooden boats (called dhows) still ferry the goods from the big freighters to the consumer and return with locally-manufactured export items. It’s a medieval sight with earthy smells and the heat-haze adding to the atmosphere, and the best spot to observe this (apart from walking up and down the waterfront or inviting yourself on board one of the boats) is from the air-conditioned comfort of the Radisson SAS Deira Creek Hotel. This old-world, yet modern, hotel is located right on the banks of the creek and a short walk from the souks. Hire a water taxi and explore the creek, go for a walk, but know that you can return to the comfort of the hotel when it gets too hot and sticky. The Arabic breakfast, served on the 10th floor overlooking the creek, is exceptional. Grab a window table and try the ‘Foul Mesdames’ with ‘Hamine Egg’ and mint tea, then make sure you try the hotel’s Persian restaurant for dinner.
