Jenkins Street Guesthouse
Nundle,
an attractive old gold mining town in northwestern NSW, nestled at the foot of
the Great Dividing Range, is a great base from which to enjoy the rugged
surrounding countryside and explore the region’s history. Hiking, horse
riding, mustering, trout fishing, gold fossicking, farm visits, 4-wheel
driving, and browsing through galleries, antique and craft shops are just some
of the things to keep visitors busy.
The
former main street bank is now Jenkins Street Guesthouse, a large solid
building with restaurant (the kitchen’s the old vault) and guest facilities
downstairs and charming comfortable guest rooms upstairs. Rooms stay true to
their colonial heritage with lots of dark wood, crisp linen, fresh flowers and
natural light, some even have screened-in sunrooms with views out over the
hills where gold created so much interest all those years ago. Bathrooms are
well renovated though and water pressure’s great.
The
downstairs restaurant offers a European menu of local produce, but why not
follow the old adage of ‘when in Rome…’ and enjoy a cold beer and bar meal
under the wide verandah of the nearby Peel Inn Hotel or drive up to the
Arc-En-Ciel Trout Farm and buy some freshly smoked trout or smoked trout pate
for a picnic.
