Temasek
By Franz Scheurer
Temasek in Parramatta has won
“Best Malaysian Restaurant” so often that it is now advisable to book. When you
get there don’t be fooled by the small Nonya eatery at the front of the lane,
Temasek is further back, inside the arcade. A large, bright space with lots of
posters and umbrellas proclaiming the virtues of Singapore on every wall; it is
noisy, bustling and full of families with kids. I don't quite understand why
restaurant guides bill this as a Malaysian restaurant. Temasek is the
traditional name for Singapore and this place is most definitely
Singaporean. It obviously is also a haven for home sick Singaporeans and
accordingly, the food is authentic.
The Beef Rendang is certainly one of the best I’ve tasted in Sydney and the
Serai and Sambal dishes are superb. They specialise in Singapore Chilli Mud
Crab and Fish Head Curry, both dishes need to be ordered three days in advance,
though. Other favourites are the 5 Spice Meat rolls, a very good Gado Gado and
the more obvious Satays and Laksas. Their 'Achar' is more like a 'Kurraba' but
it is a must-order side dish and it will be a great accompaniment to the
unctuous noodle dishes they serve.
The service is a best described as 'action and reaction' service. If you just
sit there and ignore the wait staff then they will ignore you. If you're pushy
and demand service, that's what you get in return. The restaurant is BYO and
value for money is excellent.
