Ten Bompas Hotel

Ten Bompas is cool – from the PT Cruiser that collects guests at the airport to the 10 guest suites each individually designed and outfitted by a different leading African designer, some more opulent and colonial, some more tribal, and others more minimal – but all with an unmistakable African warmth. The eye for detail is great, from the young service staff dressed in smart black who greet guests with enthusiasm and a friendly first-name approach, to the handwritten welcome note and the fresh fruit in the rooms. Suites consist of a sitting area with lounge, desk and bar joined to a large bedroom by a wood fire, which is lit in winter to warm both rooms. The generous bathroom (with toilet) is equipped with a range of full-size, South African-made toiletries, the shower recess converts to a steam room, and there’s a separate guest toilet. There’s also plenty of natural light and each suite has either a ground floor patio or balcony.

Beside the hotel’s entrance is Sides Restaurant, which flows out onto a terrace and down onto the lawn. The décor is minimalist, cream walls are graced with a few wooden African sculptures and a stone feature wall separates the main dining area from a private room. Blonde polished floorboards flow into slate tiles and then terracotta pavers on the outdoor terrace, where hurricane lamps on double-clothed linen tables provide the warm glow created by candles on their indoor counterparts. The menu is deceptively simple with an Italian leaning, using as much fresh local produce as possible, and guests are encouraged to select their own wines from the very well-stocked, glass-fronted, steel-shelved, climate-controlled wine cellar.

Ten Bompas aims to please, machine-washable laundry is done free on a daily basis and guests may choose to dine in their rooms at no extra charge. The in-room bar is complimentary as is early morning tea and coffee delivered to the room, and there’s a driver on hand to drop guests at local shopping centres, art galleries, sporting facilities and other places of interest.
