The Tyrconnell Single Malt Irish Whiskey
By Franz Scheurer
The distillery was established in 1762 and trades under the name Andrew A. Watt & Co, situated in Riverstown, Dundalk, one of the oldest distilleries in Ireland. They have been producing single malt whiskeys for a few hundred years and lately they have experimented with wood finishes. The 10 y/o Madeira Cask was originally aged in ex Bourbon casks then finished in Madeira casks, to add depth and extra flavour notes. The initial impression is typical for Irish Whiskeys, in as much as it is ultra smooth, slightly oily and fine textured. The extra ageing in Madeira casks adds Demerara sugar sweetness, raisins and spice, not too dissimilar from a good Christmas fruitcake. Cinnamon and cloves are the obvious spice, but there are hints of liquorice and allspice. It finishes sweet and medium long and makes for a terrific aperitif whiskey or you could pair it to smoked eel and colcannon.
